The Book
This is the first book I've had printed at Blurb.com, you can click here to buy copies. It
comes in both hard cover (with dust jacket) and soft cover; here is a picture of four copies:

As you can see the books come shrink wrapped (two on bottom). The book next to the top of the pile is the soft cover version (you can see the fold line where it has been opened many times). As far as I can tell the quality of the printing in both versions is equal. I was quite happy, although the color on the cover of the soft cover was a little off; we see what they say about that. My guess is that the next copy printed in soft cover will be fine.
Photos of various pages follow. There are 79 pages of images, plus the back and front covers.

Here, on the left-hand page, you start to see the advantage of custom page layouts:

You can overlap images and control which one is on top:

Here a thin white border was added around some images, and we've even blended
the image of chef cooking eggs into seperate image above it (image with the bridge):

We've included about 30 full-page images.

Full page images are quite striking, but we also like to mix in multi-image pages.

As you see, we use drop shadows to make multiple images on a page stand out.

Another example of blending two images into each other:

The book includes two-page spreads (this one is from Capetown).

And of course, LOTS of animal pictures.

Sometimes we modify images, here we added poster edges to the hotel lobby:

Another two page spread showing the red sands of Namibia.

To see details of how we created this next page, check out the
discussion of creating your own custom layout in Photoshop.

Blurb.com prints their logo on the last page, which doesn't bother me at all.

But much to my surprise, they also put a bar code on the back cover.

It takes longer to create custom page layouts than to just drag-and-drop images into
holes on pre-designed pages, but it's a lot more fun. You can be more creative.

(If anyone would like to buy a 13x11 version, instead of the 10x8 version, e-mail me and I'll create one.)
